Yesterday evening, we celebrated Chinese New Year at our Family Fun program. We read stories, did a Dragon Dance with music and costumes, and made our own paper dragons.

This is the day that librarians across the country look forward to all year, anxiously waiting to hear if our favorite books have been awarded their well deserved due. So without further ado: Newbery Medal: Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos. Honor Books: Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai and Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin. Caldecott Medal: A Ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka. Honor books: Blackout by John Rocco, Grandpa Green by Lane Smith and Me…Jane by Patrick McDonnell. For additional awards and honor books please see the ALA press release http://ala.org/news/pr?id=9108. And if you want to know what your librarians really think should have won or our favorites of the year, please stop by the Children’s Room and we’ll be glad to share.

The Bookworms book club met yesterday to talk about Lost and Found, by Andrew Clements. Seven of the 10 club member who attended voted the book “Awesome.” It was a very lively discussion, including lots of speculation about what it’s like to be a twin. Lucky for us, we have our very own set of twins to let us know. Click here to read more about the Bookworms.
On January 23, the American Library Association will announce the 2012 Newbery medal winner. Check back for the announcement.
