Celebrating the Year of the Dragon at Family Fun January 25, 2012

Yesterday evening, we celebrated Chinese New Year at our Family Fun program. We read stories, did a Dragon Dance with music and costumes, and made our own paper dragons.

2012 ALA Youth Media Awards Announced

This is the day that librarians across the country look forward to all year, anxiously waiting to hear if our favorite books have been awarded their well deserved due. So without further ado: Newbery Medal: Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos. Honor Books: Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai and Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin. Caldecott Medal: A Ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka. Honor books: Blackout by John Rocco, Grandpa Green by Lane Smith and Me…Jane by Patrick McDonnell. Lost and Found “Awesome,” say the Bookworms

The Bookworms book club met yesterday to talk about Lost and Found, by Andrew Clements. Seven of the 10 club member who attended voted the book “Awesome.” It was a very lively discussion, including lots of speculation about what it’s like to be a twin. 2012 OPLbery Medals Awarded!

Our OPLbery Medals (mock Newbery) have been awarded! After meeting monthly since March 2011, the members of the OPLbery Club (ages 9 – 13) met and voted yesterday. The Second Annual OPLbery Medal goes to … Floors, by Patrick Carman. OPLbery Honors were given to The Fingertips of Duncan Dorfman, by Meg Wolitzer, and Close to Famous, by Joan Bauer. The OPLbery members read and evaluated over 40 books before selecting these outstanding books. In March, we will begin the process all over again for the 2013 awards.

On January 23, the American Library Association will announce the 2012 Newbery medal winner. Check back for the announcement.

The Bookworms’ Crazy Fountain Ideas

Inspired by the book they read this month, Regarding the Fountain, by Kate Klise, the Bookworms Book Club has come up with a long list of things they’d like to see installed in a fountain in the library. The ideas included tropical fish, waterproof books, an ice skating rink, time travel, characters and scenery from various books, money that spouts out of the fountain, a statue of one of the club members with water spouting out of her mouth, and much, much more!

As exciting as all this sounds, we probably won’t be replacing our drinking fountains with any of these ideas any time soon!

OPLbery Mock Newbery Short List for 2011

In a few weeks, the members of the Ossining Public Library’s OPLbery Club (our mock Newbery club), will make their choice for the best book of 2011. At our meeting today, we narrowed the books down to our last six contenders.

Best Books Lists for 2011

It’s that time of year again. The “Best” lists are here. Let’s take a look at some of them.

School Library Journal has Best Lists for Picture Books, Fiction, and Nonfiction. A few of our favorites that you can see here in the library are on their list:

The New York Times has Notable Lists for Young Adult, Middle Grade, and Picture Books. Check these books out:

Kirkus Reviews has a Best Children’s Books list, which lists the books alphabetically rather than by age or genre. Here are some that we like:

Horn Book Fanfare is their list of the best of 2011. They list Picture Books, Fiction, and Nonfiction.

Last but not least is Publisher’s Weekly. They have a list for Children’s Picture Books, Fiction, and Nonfiction.

Stop by the library for these and many more great books.
