On Friday, January 8, the members of the OPLbery Club awarded the 6th annual OPLbery Medal to Serafina and the Black Cloak, by Robert Beatty. The club also gave an OPLbery Honor to Chasing Secrets, by Gennifer Choldenko.
The OPLbery Club has been meeting monthly since April of 2015. Each month, the club members talk about what books they read and discussed why they were–or weren’t–“OPLbery-worthy.”
Between April and January, the kids read nearly 40 books among them, before choosing 6 for a final short list in November. They had to read all 6 of the final books to vote on January 8.
Here’s what the club members had to say about Serafina and the Black Cloak:
“I could picture everything!”–Rose
“It was so original. I loved the ending.”–Bailey
“The author described everything perfectly.”–Mary
“It was exciting!”–Tristan
And here are some comments about Chasing Secrets:
“It left you on the edge of your seat.”
“I didn’t want to put it down.”
“It was a nice break from completely happy endings.”
