STEAM: Invisible Ink

Who doesn’t love a secret message? During Full STEAM Ahead this week, the kids learned some interesting things about secret messages.

Did you know that in ancient Greece a message would be tattooed on someone’s head, then when their hair grew long enough to cover it, they would be sent to deliver the message, their head would be shaved again, and there would be the message!

Our secret messages were much simpler. We mixed baking soda and water and wrote messages on white paper with q-tips. When the messages were dry, we painted them with grape juice concentrate. The chemical reaction of the acid and the base revealed the message!
