We had our first Full STEAM Ahead program on Wednesday, and we had lots of kids show up to make a solar oven from a pizza box.
Thank you to D’Italia Pizzeria of Ossining for the pizza boxes!
All you need is an empty and clean pizza box. First you cut a flap in the lid (leave one side attached). Then you line the bottom of the box with black construction paper (black absorbs heat), line the inside of the flap with aluminum foil (foil reflects sunlight), make a double insulated plastic wrap “window” in the opening (to keep the heat in), and roll up newspaper to line the sides (for insulation).
When your solar oven is made, you can cook in it! Put your food on the inside of the box (be sure to put it on a piece of aluminum foil or a pie plate) and close the lid. Lift the flap and place the oven in the sun. It takes longer than a regular oven, but it works. The best time of day is between 11 am and 2 pm.
All our participants were sent home with ingredients for smores and cooking instructions.
I hope the smores were delicious!
